| Name: | Enma Ai (OU) |
|---|
Character: Enma Ai
Series/Fandom: Jigoku Shoujo
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: Ageless, but appears 13, and was likely around that age when she died
Gender: Female
Species: Used to be human, but is now a spiritual entity
Sexuality: Probably straight, but has never really had any love interests,
so it's not definite.
Appearance: Ai's hair is long, fine, and pitch-black, and cobweb-like in
appearance in that many individual threads fan out from her main mass of
hair. Her eyes are scarlet, very large and round, and have a great depth
to them; looking at her directly in the eyes, one will notice that they
make her look particularly ghastly and unnerving. She usually wears a navy
blue school uniform, the kind generally reserved for winter wear, and when
going to do her duty as Jigoku Shoujo, wears a black formal kimono with
many colored flowers on it, along with a bracelet with a bell tied to it
on her wrist. She has also been seen wearing a white robe while bathing in
the river.
Personality: When she first became the Jigoku Shoujo, Ai was told by the
Lord of Hell to close her heart, and so she did. She was never
particularly talkative or outgoing to begin with, however, this just
closed her up more than ever. Before, she had been a curious little girl,
mostly quiet and gentle, as well as obedient, perhaps to a fault. But
overall, she was human, and had a personality like humans do. After about
400 years serving as the Jigoku Shoujo, she had become nearly silent,
carrying out her duty with few words or complaints, or even side thoughts;
just a numb and entirely mechanical servant of hell. When the Shibata
family enters the picture, she begins to think about her past, her current
life, and the closing up of her own emotions. After a string of incidents,
Ai continues to question her job while unconsciously opening her human
heart back up. Later observing a boy named Kurebayashi Takuma, who was in
a situation similar to her own, she decides finally to express her human
feelings once more... even though that isn't really saying much, since she
is not an emotional girl to begin with. She is thoughtful and attentive
now after opening up, and even righteous -- her sense of justice is
working once more, and if she sees a wrong, she will certainly consider
righting it. Although she may seem unresponsive to many, she is, under the
surface, creating her own thoughts and feelings again, and perhaps may
every once in a while decide to express them.
Abilities/Strengths: Being a spiritual entity, Ai has been granted certain
powers to aid her in her job as Jigoku Shoujo. She can teleport, create
elaborate illusions (including projecting images into others' minds), and
fire blasts of dark energy at will. Also, she is able to change her
tangibility: she may or may not be like a ghost at times; certain times
able to be touched, other times having physical objects go right through
her.
Weapons: None. At all. Unless you count the straw doll as a weapon, but
even then, she is unable to use it herself.
Weaknesses: Her silent, composed manner keeps her from having emotional
weaknesses for the most part, but her sense of righteousness is what may
do her in. If she thinks something is unjust, it will nag at her, whether
or not she decides to show it. Plus, her past is a sensitive spot for her;
considering her entire village tried to kill her by means of live burial
and stoning, she has a deep hatred not for people themselves, but for the
conceit within them. Physically, if you can disable her powers by some
magical means or are some form of holy spirit (angel, holy god, etc.),
you'll have the upper hand against her, for without her powers she is but
a little girl, unable to defend herself.
History: Born in a small mountain village in ancient Japan, Ai was
constantly ostracized as a child for being bad luck and for having unusual
powers. She grew up alongside her cousin, Shibata Sentarou, and her
parents as well. However, the village had a tradition -- every seven
years, a seven-year-old child was to be sacrificed to the mountain gods in
order to receive seven more years of prosperity. Ai happened to be that
unfortunate child, and was going to receive the ceremony without
complaint, until her parents asked Sentarou to hide her in the mountains
and have the villagers come to the conclusion that she had been
sacrificed.
Sentarou did so, taking her to the mountains and meeting her in secrecy
nearly every day. However, the village had hit a point of great famine.
One day, a villager spotted Sentarou and Ai meeting together, and accused
them of angering the mountain gods, and as a result, causing the famine.
They captured the two cousins, threw Ai and her parents in a pit, and
forced Sentarou to bury them alive. He had the chance to resist and to
save Ai, but he did not, and so Ai felt he betrayed her by doing what the
villagers wanted, despite the consequences.
A few nights later, he sees Ai burning the entire village down, a rather
crazed look on her face all the while. Out of extreme guilt, he flees the
village and continues his life, moving on to grow up and build a temple as
a symbol of his regret for Ai's death.
However, Ai passed out on the way to the shrine atop the mountain to
finish the deed and apparently died from blood loss. She was found by the
Lord of Hell and told she would go to hell along with everyone she loved
-- mainly her parents -- for her deeds if she did not do what he wanted.
And that was to become the "Jigoku Shoujo" (Hell Girl), who gave
retribution to those who asked in exchange for bringing their souls to
hell. She agreed, and was told as a prerequisite to close her heart up,
which she did reluctantly. So she became Jigoku Shoujo, with her parents'
souls being held hostage by the Lord of Hell.
400 years later, Ai comes across the descendents of Sentarou: Hajime and
his daughter, Tsugumi. Hajime's wife, Ayumi, had died just moments after
he threw her out of the house for having an affair with a politician he
worked with, but he refused to own up to his role in her death. Ai,
noticing this, begins to take her own anger out on them, attempting to
coax Tsugumi into using the straw doll she gives to everyone who asks for
revenge. This straw doll has a red string tied around it, symbolizing a
person's life. If the string is untied, the antagonist will be sent
straight to hell, and the person who pulled it would be bound into a
contract, selling their own soul into hell when they died. She continues
to press Tsugumi into pulling the string, and traps Hajime in her "sunset
world" that she lives in in her spare time, but Hajime is released upon
making a deal with Ai's grandmother. Once Hajime admitted his faults,
Tsugumi returned the straw doll to Ai.
Life continued from that point, the Shibatas going back to their normal
lives and Ai continuing to do her job as Jigoku Shoujo. A new situation
came up, however -- a modern-day village had devised an extremely vile
plot, involving the Jigoku Tsuushin (Hotline to Hell), which is what Ai
uses to allow humans to communicate their desire for revenge to her. They
were using the Jigoku Tsuushin for their own selfish desires, and blaming
all the disappearances on a boy named Kurebayashi Takuma, whom the called
the "devil's child". Ai and her three servants catch on to the plot, as
well as a local detective. The detective had recorded a conversation
between the residents of the village, and this conversation plus their
eyewitness accounts would stop the madness once and for all...
...Until the detective was sent to hell via the Jigoku Tsuushin.
Takuma and his sister Hotaru narrowly escape death, and Hotaru decides
that Takuma is to blame for all the insanity and bloodlust that has
accumulated in the rest of the town. She calls Ai, who gives her the straw
doll reluctantly, as well as questions whether or not it is truly Takuma's
fault. Hotaru pulls the string, promising Takuma she'll be going straight
to hell right after him. Takuma is brought to a boat destined for hell,
with Ai doing the rowing. She stops suddenly, the villainy just too much
for her to stand anymore. She sends the boat back, and Takuma finds
himself on the bottom of a cliff where Hotaru has leapt to her death. Ai
appears there, collapsed and brutally injured in the cold of winter.
Takuma walks off, saying that he has been patient with people all his
life, but now his patience has run out.
However, Ai does not stay conscious long enough to see what happens next
or to pursue him like she would have; instead, she passes out and is
pulled into Econtra.
